Indian President Salary

Realising that a cabinet secretary now gets paid more than the President of India, the Central government has decided to give the President, Vice President and Governors a raise.

The scale is whopping – more than 200%, which will lift the President’s salary from the current Rs 1.5 lakh a month to Rs 5 lakh. The Vice-President’s salary will increase to Rs 3.5 lakh a month from the existing Rs 1.10 lakh a month.

 Once a President retires, he will get a pension of Rs 1.5 lakh. The spouses of Presidents will get a secretarial assistance of Rs 30,000 per month.

The government’s decision comes after it faced an uncomfortable situation following the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission. Currently the cabinet secretary is drawing a higher salary than the President.

President of India Salary Current Figures

As per the constitution, the President’s salary till 1998 was Rs 10,000, on a monthly basis, which was increased to Rs 50,000, in the year 1998, which was again increased to Rs 150,000 in the year 2008. But including all the expenses of their travels around the world, their security, their remunerations, it turns out to be a rough 2 Crores on a monthly basis, or 22.5 Crores on an annual basis.

The President of India enjoys a  salary will be Rs.1.5 lakh per month.

In addition to the salary, he –

  • Stays at the lavish Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • Travels in a bulletproof Mercedes Benz.
  • Has more than 200 employees as his staff


Post Retirement Benefits

On retirement, the President gets-

  • Rs.75,000 per month as pension.
  • A furnished rent free bungalow.
  • Two free land-line and a mobile phones,
  • Five personal staff including a private secretary.
  • An official car and staff expenses of Rs.60,000 a year.
  • He can travel free with a companion by train or air.


Official Residence

Rashtrapati Bhavan(RB) is the official residence of the Indian President which is the largest Presidential Palace in the world.

  • RB sprawls in 330 acres with a built up area of 200,000 sq ft dividing into 340 rooms in a single story building.
  • RB has stables, hospitals, golf course, mughal gardens.
  • RB is maintained by 200 staff at all times generating an electricity bill of 6.7 Cr per year(2008 stat)
  • Apart from RB, The Rashtrapati Nilayam at Bolarum, Hyderabad and Retreat Building at Shimla are the official Retreat Residences of the President of India.
