1. US Presidential Elections

The biggest global event of 2016 was undoubtedly the US Presidential Elections, held on November 8th, 2016. The two Presidential nominees were Hillary Clinton (Democratic Candidate) and Donald Trump (Republican Candidate). The ultimate winner was Donald Trump of the Republican Party, to the surprise of many people. He will serve as the 45th President of the United States of America.

A referendum was held on  23 June, 2016 to decide whether Britain should leave or remain in the European Union. Majority of the voters favoured Britian leaving the European Union. BREXIT is a word that has become as a shorthand way of saying the UK leaving the European Union (EU) – merging the words Britain and exit to get Brexit.

3. Rio Olympics

The 2016 Rio Olympics, also known as the Summer Olympics or the Games of the 31st Olympiad was the biggest sports event of 2016. It was held between August 5th, 2016 to August 21st, 2016. More than 200 nations participated with 11000 plus athletes. USA won the medal tally with a whooping 121 medals. Great Britain followed next with 67 medals.

4. Pokemon Go becomes a Global Phenomena

As soon as Pokemon Go was released, the game became a global phenomenon. So much so that the servers crashed and it had to be released in select countries only in the beginning. After establishing a game account, an individual player creates and customizes his own avatar. Once created, the avatar is displayed on a map using the player’s current geographical location.

5. Zika Virus Outbreak

There was a major Zika Virus Outbreak in 2016. The virus was detected earlier but the effects were felt globally in 2016 with a lot of individuals losing their lives to this virulent strain. Warnings were issued by WHO to travelers especially in Africa and Asia. The disease is deadly and is caused by Aedes Mosquito. Individuals affected with it show symptoms including mild fever, rashes on skin, joint pain etc.

6. The Rise of ISIS

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, commonly known as ISIS is a dangerous and violent militant outfit in current times. At present it is the most powerful terrorist organization in the world. 8. Cuban Revolutionary Fidel Castro Passes Away

2016 witnessed the death of Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz. He was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008. The world saw him as a powerful and dangerous dictator.

Music legend Prince bid adieu to the world at the age of 57. He was loved the world over for his musical compositions. He was quite an innovator and was popular for his eclectic works. 10. Aleppo Bombardment

Violent airstrikes struck Aleppo leaving hundreds dead and injured. It was one of the deadliest airstrikes in Aleppo since the past five years. United Nations condemned this action but not much has changed since then. The violence seems to continue with civilians being affected each day.

1. Demonetization 

On the eve of November 8th, 2016 the honorable Prime Minister of India , Narendra Modi issued a national statement to curb the menace of black money and corruption. All the 500 and 1000 rupee notes were deemed as non-legal tender, thereby bringing a stop to their use and replacing them with alternative currency of Rs 500 and Rs. 2000. This was the biggest step since post independence to tackle black money.

2. GST Bill

Good and Services Tax in India, popularly known as the GST Bill, is the biggest reform in India’s indirect tax structure. It will be implemented from April 1, 2017. The biggest use of GST Bill will disincentivise tax evasion. If you don’t pay tax on what you sell, you don’t get credit for taxes on your inputs. Additionally, low tax rates will follow from GST covering all goods and services, with tax only on value addition and set-offs against taxes on inputs/previous purchases.

3. TATA-Mistry Split

The $103 billion TATA empire saw quite some fireworks when the Chairman of TATA Group – Ratan Tata fired the erstwhile Cyrus Mistry from the position of Chairman. Less than four years after Cyrus Mistry, 50, was appointed chairman of the salt-to-software group, the board of Tata Sons, the flagship holding company of the conglomerate, voted to remove him in a meeting held on October 24, 2016. This made a significant impact on the corporate world as on the share holders of the company.

4. Odd-Even Policy

Delhi Government experimented with the Odd-Even policy in an attempt to curb the rising air pollution levels in the national capital. While many citizens supported the move , there were others who criticized it on the grounds that it was interfering with their right to choice of mode of personal transport. The Delhi Government assured the citizens that the odd-even scheme would be implemented with better preparedness the next time it is implemented.

5. Cauvery Water Dispute

The Cauvery water dispute experienced its worst when the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were at logger heads with each other. It all started with the directive of the Honorable Supreme Court asking the Government of Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. There were agitations and bandhs in both these south India states leaving the common life disturbed.

6. Unrest in JNU

One of the premier universities of the country – Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi witnessed a mass political unrest when a musical/poetry event – A country without a post office — against the judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt” was organized in the JNU campus. Charges of sedition were filed against many including the President of JNUSU – Kanhaiya Kumar.

7. Jat Agitation in North India

There was widespread violence and agitation by the Jats in the north Indian states of Haryana, Punjab and even UP.  The worst affected state was Haryana where property worth 500 crores was damaged by an unruly mob over days of protest. The agitatation was part of a protest against the state government for not treating Jats in the category of OBCs and thereby not giving them reservation.

8. Burhan Wani’s Encounter

Burhan Wani, the poster boy for Hizbul Mujhaideen was killed in a joint operation at Anantnag, J&K. The 21-year-old reportedly joined the militant outfit in 2010 to avenge the alleged assault on him and his brother by the Army. He was been in the news for releasing videos, warning of attacks in J&K. Burhan carried a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head.

9. Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalita Passes Away

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister , Ms Jayalalita died after battling illness in the hospital for several months. Popularly known as Amma, she was a leader who was loved by millions of Tamil Nadu citizens. She played an important role in eliminating patriarchy out of the south Indian state and launched many schemes for empowering women. After her death, her party is split over the next leader in line, although a close aid – O. Panneerselvam was made Chief Minister for the interim period.

10. Udta Punjab Row

The Censor Board of India and the production team of the bollywood movie – Udta Punjab were engaged in a legal battle over the cuts suggested in the multi-starrer film.The issue gained prominence when the CBFC’s review committee suggested a whopping 89 cuts in the film, including deleting all references to Punjab and its cities, politics, elections and doing away with the expletives. However the film was finally released with just one cut with the directive of the Bombay High Court.
