The Academy Awards – Oscars

  • ‘The Academy Awards’ or ‘Oscars’ is a group of artistic and technical honors given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements in the United States film industry as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership.
  • The various category winners are awarded a copy of a statuette, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, which has become commonly known by its nickname “Oscars.”
  • The first Academy Awards presentation was held on May 16, 1929, at a private dinner function at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with an audience of about 270 people.
  • As of now there are 24 categories for awards of merit.


Oscars : Academy Award of Merit (Oscar statuette)

  • The best known award is the Academy Award of Merit, more popularly known as the Oscar statuette.
  • The statuette is made of gold-plated britannium on a black metal base, it is 13.5 in (34.3 cm) tall, the award weighs 8.5 lb (3.856 kg) and depicts a knight rendered in Art Deco style holding a crusader’s sword standing on a reel of film with five spokes.
  • The five spokes represent the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians.

  • The 89th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the AMPAS, honored the best films of 2016, on February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
  • ‘La La Land’ received the most oscars nominations with a record tying 14 nominations and won in 6 categories.
